外国人に華道とフラワーアレンジメントの違いを説明できますか？　海外に留学や出張したりすると、日本の文化について聞かれる機会があると思います。「私の国を代表する文化は……」と言葉につまってしまったら、恥ずかしいですよね。自国の文化を説明する際には、理解をすることが大切です。まずは、日本語で読んでみて確認し、その後英語で言えるように練習してみましょう。

華道とは？

Kado is a traditional Japanese art originating from the Heian period in which flowers and plants are specially arranged in a vase for appreciation.

華道とは四季折々の草木や花などを花器に飾り、鑑賞する日本の平安時代からの伝統的な芸術です。

It is also called Ikebana.

「生け花」とも呼ばれています。

Those flowers are usually displayed in tokonoma.

※tokonoma: an alcove in a traditional Japanese room where art and ikebana are displayed.

花は家の床の間などに飾られます。

It is said that Ikebana began when the Buddhist monk offered flowers before a mortuary tablet.

華道は仏教の僧侶が仏前に花を供えたことが始まりと言われています。

Flowers and plants in ikebana represent human life and express its beauty and venerableness.

華道は草木や花を人間の命に例え、その美しさと尊さを表現します。

In Ikebana, flowers also represent heaven, earth and man, which are to be arranged in a proper balance.

華道では天、地、人を草木や花に例えバランス良く表現します。

People enjoy seeing the mystic power of plants expressed in the flower organ.

華道は植物の神秘的な力を花器の上で表現し、鑑賞して楽しみます。 

It was traditionally learnt by women as part of bridal training.

昔は花嫁修業の一貫として女性が習いました。

There are many styles inIkebana . Based on Ikenobo style, there are about 2000-30000 styles.

華道にも流派があり、池坊を中心に2.000～30.000もの流派があります。

Ikenobo style is the base of Ikebana established by Senoh Ikebono.

池坊とは池坊専応が作り出した華道の根源です。

Ikenobo Senno is a school of Japanese flower arrangement. Ikenobo Senno was a buddhist monk who strived to raise the artistic level of flower arrangement , and is the reason that Tachibana became mainstream.

池坊専応とは立花の流派、池坊を芸術的に高めて池坊が立花界の主流となるきっかけを作った人物です。 

There are 3 patterns ( Rikka, Shoka, Jiyuuka) in Ikenobo style.

池坊には「立花」「小花」「自由花」の三つの様式があります。

Ikebana is popular among many generations as enrichment lessons.

華道はお稽古事として、幅広い世代から人気です。

Ikebana uses plants and flowers as Yorishiro (an object representative of a devine spirit).

華道では神様のよりしろとして草木や花などを使います。

Ikebana exhibitions are held at exhibition spaces, post offices and train stations.

花展はデパートなどの催事場や、郵便局、駅などで開催されています。

立花 (rikka)

Rikka is a technique of putting plants and flowers in a long and narrow vertical vase.

立花は細長い花びんに草木や花を縦長に生ける技法です。

Rikka is the basic form of Ikebana .

立花は生け花の基本的な形です。

Rikka mainly represent beauty of landscape and the universe.

立花は主に自然の景観美、神羅万象を表します。

Rikka represent providence of nature.

自然の摂理を立花では表現しています。

生花(Shoka)

Shoka focuses on the beauty of birth, when plants start sprouting.

生花は草木の命が現れる出生の美に注目します。

Shoka represents the growing energy and feeling of life.

植物が懸命に生きる姿を表現するのが生花です。

自由花(jiyuuka)

There are not any fixed styles in Jiyuuka.

自由花には定まった形はありません。

With Jiyuuka style, wide ranges of expression are possible.

自由花では幅広い表現が可能です。

Jiyuuka style is utilized in many interpretations of events.

自由花はイベントなどの演出に多く使われています。

作法

First, Seiza in front of the alcove of the room, then bow once towards the flower before seeing.

※Seiza: sitting position where feet are folded under thighs

床の間の前に正座をし、花に向かって一礼してから鑑賞します。

See the overall structure first, followed by arrangement of the flowers, floral organ and garden tub. Then enjoy the moment.

最初に全体の構造を見て、花材の組み合わせ、花器、花台をじっくり鑑賞します。

Lastly, bow to the person who put together the ikebana, showing the gratitude.

最後に花を生けた人に感謝の一礼をします。

フラワーアレンジメントと生け花の違い

In Ikebana, flowers, grasses, trees, and all different kinds of plants are used.

生け花は、花以外にも草や木、植物全般を使用します。

In Ikebana, flowers and plants are pierced with a needle called a “kenzan”. The flower arrangements are then placed into a water absorbent sponge which is called an “oasis”.

生け方も異なり、生け花は「剣山」という針が連なったもので花や草木を刺して活けます。フラワーアレンジメントは「オアシス」という吸水性のスポンジに花を刺します。

In Ikebana, attention is also paid to the space in which the arrangements are to be placed. The result is quite different from using a flower arrangement where the look of the space isn’t considered.

生け花は花を生ける空間にもこだわりがあります。空間に関係なく、ふんだんに花を使うフラワーアレンジメントとはやはり違います。
