The exact origins of moon viewing are uncertain, but most people believe it came from China.

In China, moon viewing was a celebration of the harvest.

中国では秋の収穫を祝うものでした

According to the lunar calendar, August 15th hosted the clearest sky, and therefore the brightest, most beautiful view of the moon.

旧暦の8月15日は一年で最も空が澄んで月が明るく美しいと言われていました

The moon viewing day in 2015 is September 27th, but in 2016 it will be September 15th.

The moon viewing day doesn’t always coincide with a full moon. Generally, they’re a few days apart.

It is strictly Japanese tradition to celebrate moon viewing day on September 15th.

When the tradition came from China, Heian Era aristocrats viewed the moon indirectly from boats, enjoying the reflection of the moon on the water’s surface.

中国から伝わった時、平安貴族たちは船に乗り、月を直接見ずに水面に揺れる月を楽しんでいました

In modern times, dango and pampas grass are given as offerings during moon viewing.

今ではおだんごやすすきをお供えして、月を眺めます

Also, taro root, edamame, chestnuts and sake are given as offerings.

この他に、里芋や枝豆、栗、お酒などもお供えします

Offerings vary by location within Japan, and special ceremonies are held at each location, too.

日本の地域によってお供えものが少し違ったり、地域独自の催し物があったりします

However, this tradition is becoming less common, especially in urban areas.

ただ、都心を中心としてこのような習慣は消えつつあります

It is not well known, however moon viewing should be performed not only on August 15th, but September 15th as well, to prohibit any bad omens.

あまり知られていませんが、日本では旧暦の8月15日だけでなく、旧暦の9月15日も月を眺めないと縁起が悪いとされています
