台風っていったいどんなもの？　台風体験のない外国人に改めて説明するとなるとちょっと困るものですよね。とは言え危険な時はあるし、緊急時は日本語表記ばかりで戸惑うことも多いハズ。日本の台風をなるべく短い簡単な英語で説明しましょう。

What is a typhoon?

台風ってそもそも何？

September, a turning point in the seasons of Japan, is the start of typhoon season.

季節の変わり目の9月が台風シーズンです

Japanese typhoons originate near the Philippines, towards the equator where the water is warm.

赤道近くの、海水温が高いフィリピン付近で発生します

Storms that originate in this region are called typhoons.

このフィリピン付近で発生したものを台風と呼びます

When tropical low pressure storms gain momentum and break the 17 meter-per-second wind speed threshold, they are officially called typhoons.

熱帯低気圧がだんだん勢いを増して、最大風速約17m/秒を超えると台風と呼ばれます

Typhoons reach Okinawa and then Japan’s main island of Honshu from the Philippines.

フィリピンから沖縄、日本の本州に北上してきます

When typhoons reach land in Japan, they become significantly weaker.

台風が北上するほど威力が弱まります

Typhoons are given numbered names, such as “Typhoon No. 17.”

台風が来る前はずっと雨ですが、台風が通過した途端、数時間で雨が止みます

After a typhoon passes through, the sky is generally very sunny.

台風が通過した後は晴天に見舞われます

The clement weather after a typhoon is called “Typhoon sunshine.”

台風の後の晴天を台風一過と呼びます

Phenomena similar to typhoons include cyclones in India and hurricanes in America.

台風と似たものに、インド洋のサイクロン、アメリカのハリケーンがあります 

If maximum average wind speed breaks 33 meters-per-second, it’s a hurricane.
