　日本での極刑は死刑です。現在、主要国首脳会議G8に出席する国の中ではアメリカと日本だけが死刑が行われる国となっています。

　日本での死刑方法は絞首と定められており、法務大臣が死刑執行命令書に署名した後、5日以内に死刑が執行されます。一説では、ほとんどの死刑囚が死刑執行命令書署名のあと、5日目の朝10時に刑が執行されると言われています。

　70年代頃までは、死刑執行前夜に死刑囚に死刑執行の通達が行われ、夕食には希望通りのメニューが出されていましたが、ある死刑確定者が通達後に自殺したことを受け、現在では死刑囚の家族、被害者の遺族、マスメディアを含め本人にも死刑執行直前まで通達はされないことになっています。

　日本では極刑として死刑が命ぜられるようになってから約1,200年が経ち、他国と同じように死刑廃止論も強く論じられつつあります。

The maximum penalty a court can impose in Japan is the death penalty.　Out of the G8 countries, only Japan and the United States retain the death penalty.

Executions in Japan are by hanging, and must happen within five days of a 'death order' issued by the Justice Minister. Although the exact timing is not publicly known, it is believed that executions are usually conducted on the fifth day at 10 a.m.

Until the 1970s, the condemned prisoner was informed of their impending execution the night before and they would be given a choice of last meal. However, as one condemned prisoner commited suicide after being notified, the process was changed and there is no longer prior notification including to the prisoner’s family and the victim’s family.

Although the death penalty has existed in Japan for more than 1,200 years, it is nonetheless a contentious issue as in other countries.
