日本人にとってみれば当たり前の「電動アシスト自転車」。よく日本人のママたちは前や後ろに子どもを乗せて、近所の用事を済ませる日常的な風景ですが、外国人たちは「あれはサーカスか！？」と驚くのです。日本の交通事情など、さっそく英語で説明して、サーカスの練習ではないことを全力で否定しましょう。

　日本に初めて来た外国人の方たちが、日本のお母さんたちが子どもを乗せて自転車で走る姿に驚くという話をよく聞きます。確かに、日本以外、特に欧米諸国ではあまり見かけない風景です。

Something that may surprise visitors to Japan is how common it is for parents to ride bicycles with child seats at the front and rear.

　子どもを後ろに取り付けられた座席に乗せ、さらにもうひとりを前かご部分についた座席にも座らせて、両手に買い物袋とバッグを持って坂道でも登っていく姿は、日本ではおなじみですが確かに見慣れない人が見ると驚くかもしれません。

The sight of Japanese parents riding bicycles with two children and heavy bags of shopping, even on steep roads, is now commonplace. So much so, that many Japanese do not give it a second look despite it being quite surprising for the uninitiated.

　2009年7月1日に安全基準を満たす3人乗り自転車は警視庁に認可されることになり、日本国内の大手自転車メーカーが正式に3人乗り自転車を売り出しました。その多くは「電動アシスト機能」がついており、ペダルを漕ぐことで推進に電気の力が足され楽に坂でも上がることができるのです。

Bicycle manufacturers began releasing specially designed models with front and rear child seats following initial approvals by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department in July, 2009.

Not only are these safely designed, but many come with a rechargeable electric assist feature. This helps provide a smooth ride even on hilly roads by using an electric motor to augment pedal power.

　このように特別大きな力がなくても手軽に走れるようになったことや、車のように駐車スペースの確保が難しくないため、子どもがふたりいても、幼稚園や習いごとの送り迎えや、家族でのお出かけにかかる家族の負担が軽減されました。平均して2時間から3時間の充電で、30キロから50キロ走ることができるので、自転車でも遠出ができます。

This feature greatly helped parents who need or want to transport their children by bicycle, because riding with electric assist does not require as much skill or power as an unpowered model. In addition, it is very convenient because the effective range is 30-50km per charge, and the charging time for the lithium ion battery is two to three hours.

　年々、おしゃれな雑誌とコラボレーションした高級自転車や、デザインも色もおしゃれに工夫されたものも発売されるようになり、色んなバリエーションから選ぶこともできることも魅力といえるでしょう。

　車やバイクの販売台数が落ち込む中、電動アシスト自転車は出荷台数が増えています。

Recently the design of bicycles with electric assist has expanded greatly. There are now premium models with various designs and colors. Some designs are actually based on the latest fashion trends as seen in magazines.

Despite stagnant motor vehicle and motorcycle sales in Japan in recent years, electric assist bicycle sales have actually been increasing.
