じめじめとした梅雨時期を過ぎると、海開きのシーズンですよね。海開きの神主さんの祈祷や、海の家の営業スタート。日本では当たり前の夏の風物詩的なイベントも、常夏の国では行われておらず、説明がなかなか難しいものです。日本の海開きや海水浴事情について５つのフレーズで説明してみましょう。

Umi-biraki is a time of year in Japan when shops open on the beach and beach equipment is available. The season. 日本では、海水浴場などを設置している期間やその日のことを「海開き」と呼びます。海開きの時期は地域の気候によって差がありますが、７月１日から8月31日までが海開きの一般的な期間です。また、海開き初日には、神主さんを招いて海の安全や繁盛をお祈りする神事が行われます。

During umi-biraki there are tire tubes and beach umbrellas available for hire on the beach. There are also umi-no-ie (shops on the beach) where a wide range of food and drink is for sale including ice cream, beer, curry, ramen and hamburgers.

海水浴場には、浮き輪やパラソルなどのレンタルができて、アイスクリームやビール、カレーやラーメン、ハンバーガーなどの軽食ができる「海の家」がいくつも建ち並びます。

Shark and jellyfish nets are used to protect swimmers, car parks are well-organized and lifeguards are on duty to protect swimmers and help visitors feel safe and enjoy themselves.

「海の家」以外にも、クラゲやサメから海水浴客を守るネットがの設置やされたり、駐車場が設営されたり、ライフセーバーが配置されたりと、海水浴を楽しむ人が安全で快適に楽しめるようになっています。

Images of children running excitedly into the water straight after the umi-biraku ceremony are widely reported on TV news every year. Some beaches are used as dance clubs at night, which creates problems especially with noise. Some beaches have banned alcohol and noisy parties as a result.

地域の子どもたちが、海開き直後の海に大喜びで走って初泳ぎを楽しむ様子は、毎年夏の始まりを連想させるニュースとして報道されています。また、近年の問題として、夜間にダンスクラブのようなイベントが催され騒音問題になることが多いため、飲酒や騒音を禁止する海水浴場もあります

Although swimming at the beach is permitted outside umi-biraki, there are no lifeguards or showers available. Many people assume they are not allowed to use the beach.

海開きをする前の時期でも、海の中に入って罰則はありませんが、ライフガードがいなかったり、シャワーなども使えないので、海開きの期間しか泳いではいけないと思っている人が多いです。
