ホームステイや留学のお土産は、何をもっていけば喜ばれるのか、予算はどのくらいにしたらいいのか、悩むものです。そこで今回は大手英会話スクールのAEONとGabaの外国人講師のみなさんに、ふだん帰国の際に家族に持参するお土産や、日本で共感した、おみやげにおすすめのアイテムを教えていただきました。外国人の視点で見る日本のお土産ものは新鮮なものもあるので要チェックです。

I think a nice bottle of nihonshu would be a good souvenir.

おいしい日本酒が良いお土産だと思います。

理由は？

Many people in the United States have had nihonshu before, but many people don’t know enough about it to choose a high quality example. Also it is common to have sake at a Japanese restaurant or sushi bar, but less common to have a bottle of sake at home to enjoy.

アメリカ人の多くは日本酒を飲んだことはありますが、上等なお酒を選ぶほどよく知りません。アメリカでは和食レストランやスシ・バーで日本酒をよく飲みますが、自宅で楽しむために日本酒を瓶で買ったりはしません。

Japanese KitKat bars of various flavors.

日本のいろいろな味のキットカット

理由は？

We have regular KitKat bars in America, but Japan has an amazing assortment of flavors to choose from. Not only are there regular sweet flavors like strawberry or custard, there are savory and vegetable options like wasabi. People in America would really be interested to see something that is familiar but also so different at the same time.

アメリカにもキットカットはありますが、日本では地域限定などたくさんの種類の味が選べます。ストロベリーやカスタードといったスイーツ系だけではなく、例えばわさび味のような薬味や野菜味のものもあります。アメリカにもある同じ品物をまったく違うもの（味）をもらえたら、きっと面白がると思います。

Kokeshi doll

こけし

理由は？

I lived in Sendai for a while and I always liked seeing (and painting) Kokeshi dolls. I feel they show many different aspects of Japanese culture. Kokeshi dolls have a long history starting out as toys for farmers daughters and now being considered artistically and culturally important. The high level of craftsmanship and exquisite designs really demonstrate Japanese attention to detail and skill at creating small but beautiful things. The final reason I think they make a great gift is that if you’re lucky, you can find a place where you can paint them yourself, adding a level of personalization sure to delight the person you give them to.

仙台にしばらく住んでいて、こけしを見ることも色付けをすることも好きでした。見ていると日本文化のさまざまな面を知ることができます。こけしには長い歴史があって、当初は農家の子供の玩具として作られ、今では芸術的にも文化的にも重要なものです。ハイレベルな職人技と素晴らしいデザインは、日本人の細部への注意力と小さく美しいものを作る技術が表れています。また、自分で絵付けをすることができる場所を見つけることができたら、オリジナルのデザインにすることで、あげる相手にとってさらに特別なものになると思うので、良いお土産だと思います。

Snacks!

お菓子！

理由は？

While chips and cookies are common everywhere something I am always requested to bring back with me when I go back to the UK is Japanese snacks. Why? Well it could be the unique flavors (soy sauce KitKat anyone?), the fact that some of the snacks here are completely different from what we have at home (rice crackers, wasabi peas and so on) or even that some snacks have been so ingrained in people’s minds as being representative of Japan (Pocky, Hi-chew etc.) Whatever the reason I always make sure to have a bag packed with snacks for my friends and family when I head back home.

ポテトチップスやクッキーはどこでも普通にありますが、イギリスに帰る時にいつもリクエストされるのが、日本のお菓子です。なぜかと言うと、しょうゆ味のキットカットなど、ユニークな味のものだったり、おせんべいなどは向こうで売っている日本のお菓子とはまったく違うものもあります。
また、ポッキーやハイチュウのような、日本ならではのお菓子もあります。理由はどうあれ、帰国するときはいつも、家族や友人のためにバッグいっぱいのお菓子を持って帰ります。
