日本の伝統的な夏の催しといえば盆踊りや花火大会などのお祭りです。これから秋にかけて催される様々なお祭りには、あんず飴やわたあめ屋、金魚すくいなど、昔ながらの屋台が並び、みこしかつぎや盆踊りなど風流な祭事を楽しむことができます。
そんな日本文化を色濃く感じられる祭りを外国の方にも楽しんでもらうため、祭りにまつわる様々な雑学をピックアップ、英訳フレーズと共にご紹介します。ぜひ外国人の友だちを誘ってお祭りを楽しみましょう！
●「お祭り」を英語で説明してみましょう！
“Omatsuri” means a ritual for worshipping gods or Buddha, or an event held in gratitude towards nature.
「お祭り」とは、神や仏をまつる儀式や、自然に感謝する催しのことです
The word “Omatsuri” is used for festivals held in a shrine. Festivals held in Buddhist temples are called “Ennichi.”
神社で行われる場合「お祭り」と呼びますが、お寺の場合は「縁日」と呼びます
A shrine is a place for worshipping gods, while temple is a place for worshipping Buddha.
神社は神様をまつるところで、寺は仏様をまつるところです
There are up to 300,000 festivals throughout Japan.
日本全国では30万ものお祭りがあります
Festivals have many meanings. These include prayer for a bumper crop, or expression of gratitude after crop harvest.
お祭りには、豊作祈願や収穫への感謝など、それぞれに意味があります
At the festivals, you can see lots of people wearing Japanese traditional clothes called “Yukata.”
お祭りには日本の伝統的な衣装の「浴衣」を着る人がたくさんいます
Among various types of festivals, there is a festival called “Noryousai,” which is held for people who want to escape summer heat and enjoy a cool evening.
お祭りの中には、夏の暑さを避けて涼しさを味わうための「納涼祭」があります
If fireworks are displayed in “Noryousai,” the festival can also be called “Hanabitaikai” or firework displays.
花火を打ち上げて涼む「納涼祭」は「花火大会」と呼ばれる場合もあります
There is the word “Omatsuri otoko (a festival guy).” The term is used to describea noisy person who loves to make a lot ofnoise, just like he’s at a festival.
喧騒が好きでお祭りのようにやかましい人物のことを「お祭り男」と呼びます
●「出店」について説明してみましょう！
At the Japanese festival, there are rows of stalls called “Demise.”
日本のお祭りでは「出店」と呼ばれる屋台が並びます
At the festival, you can buy your favorite food from a food stall, then enjoy it while walking around.
祭りでは、好きなお店で食べ物を買い、歩きながら食べ物を楽しみます
Apart from the food, children can enjoy other activities at Demise such as a shooting game, goldfish scooping game, or ring toss.
出店には食べ物屋のほかに、射的、金魚すくい、輪投げなど子供が楽しめるアクティビティがあります
Things representing Demise at the Japanese festival may include “Wata ame,” “Anzu ame,” and “Goldfish scooping.”
お祭りで代表的な出店には、「わたあめ」「あんず飴」「金魚すくい」などがあります
“Wata ame” is a fluffy candy made from sugar. It’s called cotton candy in English.
「わたあめ」とは、コットンのようにふわふわの砂糖菓子のことです
“Anzu ame” is a candy made from Anzu plum pierced on a chopstick. It is glazed with syrup called Mizu ame and kept cool on ice.
「あんず飴」とは、あんず（スモモ）に割り箸を刺し、水飴をからめて氷上で冷やしたお菓子です
“Goldfish scooping” is the most famous game for children. You need to scoop goldfish from a basin with a scoop. The scoop is made from a thin sheet of Japanese paper, so you need to be careful so that the paper will not be torn apart while you are playing.
「金魚すくい」は子どもに最も人気のゲームです。薄い和紙で作られた網を破かないように注意しながら、水槽に泳ぐ金魚をすくいあげます。すくった金魚はもらえます
