おだんごやすすきの意味は？

Dango, or rice dumplings, were originally made from that year’s rice harvest.

収穫に感謝してお米の粉で作ったお団子をお供えしたのが始まりです

Dango are used as a symbol of the moon because of their round shape.

だんごは月に見立てて丸い形になっています

After the offering, it is believed eating dango will provide health and happiness.

お供えが終わったらおだんごを食べると健康と幸せになると考えられています

Other regions offer taro root to celebrate the harvest instead of dango.

地域によってはおだんごではなく、里芋の収穫を祝う意味でお供えしています

Pampas grass is offered as a way of inviting gods into the tradition.

すすきは神様を招く物として供えられます

Pampas grass was believed to have the power to ward off demons.

すすきには魔よけの力があると信じられていました

Legend says that hanging the pampas grass used in the offering from the eaves of your home will prevent sickness for one year.

お月見に供えたすすきを軒下に吊るすと、1年間病気をしないという言い伝えもあります

The moon resembles a rabbit pounding mochi rice with a hammer, they say.

月の模様はうさぎが餅つきをしているように見えると言われています

In Japan, there is also a story about a rabbit that lives on the moon.

Are there other examples of moon viewing in Japanese culture?

The yolk of an egg often symbolizes the moon. In cooking, “moon viewing,” or tsukimi, eggs are sunny-side up eggs that have the yolk fully intact.

日本では卵の卵黄を月に見立て、料理では「月見」という名前のものは、かき混ぜていない卵が入っていることを意味することがあります 

McDonald’s in Japan sells a tsukimi burger from September to October.

日本マクドナルドでは毎年9月から10月ごろに「月見バーガー」を発売します

The tsukimi burger is a regular hamburger topped with a sunny-side egg.

「月見バーガー」は通常のハンバーガーに目玉焼きがサンドされているものです

Also, tsukimi versions of Japanese soba and udon noodles, topped with a full cracked egg, are common.

日本のそばやうどんにも、「月見そば」や「月見うどん」などがあり、卵が割って入っていることを意味します

Also, it may be worth knowing that the virtual idol Miku Hatsune has a song titled Otsukimi Recital. However, the lyrics don’t have anything to do with traditional moon viewing.

ちなみに、バーチャル・アイドル歌手の初音ミクの曲にも「お月見リサイタル」という曲がありますが、特にお月見のことは歌詞に出てきません
