When we moved to Arizona house, there were some HOA rules for the front yard in our neighborhood.

私達がアリゾナの家に引っ越した時に、HOA（近所会）の家の前の庭のルールが幾つかありました。

for example,

例えば、

You have to finish your landscaping in 3 months.

You have to plant at least 2 trees.

You can not hang clothes in front of your yard.

引っ越してから３ヵ月以内に庭を整え終わらせること（更地で家を渡されます）

庭に最低２本の木を植える

庭には一切洗濯物など干しては行けない、　その他いろいろ……

A couple of months after we moved into the new house,

引っ越してから数ヵ月経った日、

we got a letter from the HOA said that we will get $20 fine for not taking in our black trash bin.

近所会から前の庭にゴミ箱を出しっぱなしにしているので、２０ドルの罰金！　という通知が舞い込みました。

Because we left the trash bin out one day too long.

（ゴミの日の翌日の朝までゴミ箱が出ていたため）

Another month:

そしてまた別な月には……

We got a letter from the HOA said that our front yard has some weeds growing in it.

近所会から再び前の庭に雑草が生え始めたので罰金２０ドル！　という通知が舞い込みました。

There will be fine if you don't take care of it soon.

雑草をすぐに抜かないと、罰金は週ごとにどんどん高くなっていきます、と書かれてありました。

It's said that the fine will get bigger each week.

So I took care of weeds as soon as we got the letter.

そして私は急いで前の庭の草むしりをしました。

（この時は小さな草がほんのちょこちょこと芽を出したくらいで、雑草と言える程でも無かった）

Then Halloween season came!

そしてハロウィンの季節がやってきました。

Just few days before the Halloween, we carved the pumpkins to decorate out front yard.

ハロウィンの数日前にカボチャをくり抜いて前の庭に飾りました。

And we put the carved pumpkins in the patio for the trick-or-treaters to see.

当日キャンディーをもらいに来る子ども達にジャック・オー・ランタンを見せるため（玄関横の）パティオに置きました。

Right after Halloween we got another letter from the HOA, it said that there is a rotted pumpkins in the front yard.

Fine is $20. 

すると、ハロウィンが終わってすぐ、また近所会から罰金を言い渡す！　という通知が舞い込みました。

今回は前の庭に腐りかけたカボチャが置かれっぱなしになっているので、「罰金２０ドル」と書かれてありました。

The carved pumpkins don't last too long because the weather is too hot in Arizona.

くり抜いたカボチャはアリゾナでは暑過ぎるため長持ちはしません。

But I couldn't believed it because the carved pumpkins were behind the block wall in our patio, and couldn't be seen from the street

only by people walking up to the door.

しかし、今回の通知は全く納得がいかないものでした。

というのも、ジャック・オー・ランタンはパティオのブロックの中に隠れる所に置かれてあって、道路からは全く見えない場所にあり、玄関に近づいて来てやっと見える所に置いてあったからです。

An HOA is sometimes good to have but sometimes it's very painful thing.

HOAはあれば便利な時もあるけれど、時々かなりうっとうしいものでもあります。

Now over 15 years later, the HOA still exists, but it is much more reasonable in the things it does.

引っ越して約１５年、いまだに近所会ではいろんなルールがありますが、引っ越した当初と比べるとルールはかなり緩くなりました。

Talking about Halloween・・・

ハロウィンと言えば……

It's is fun to carve pumpkins.

これは以前に私達がカボチャをくり抜いて作ったジャック・オー・ランタンです。

ジャック・オー・ランタン作りは楽しいですよ！

I love to sew.

Almost every Halloween costume I made by hand for the kids and me.

裁縫が好きな私は、ハロウィンのコスチュームはほとんど手作りしてきました。

I also love to cook!

料理も好きな私！

I made these dinner rolls (bread) for Halloween one year!

これもハロウィン用に作ったパンです。
