 The South of France

You might think that French food is rich in creme, butter and eggs and that it isn’t very good for health. It can be true in the northern part of France. However, in the south,　( 1 ). Traditional southern French cuisine*1 uses a lot of olive oil and tomatoes that are grown in the region. These products are as abundant there as in Italy and Spain. They also grow many fruits such as apples, pears, apricots and even citrus fruits thanks to the warm climate.
The region borders*2 Switzerland, Italy and Spain. It has the Mediterranean Sea in the south and the Atlantic Ocean in the West. ( 2 ) such as Nice, Cannes and Marseille along the Mediterranean Sea in addition to hills and mountains inland*3 so you can imagine how beautiful the landscapes are.
Therefore, it is not surprising that the region has attracted many artists and has drawn inspiration for many paintings such as “Sunflowers” by Van Gogh. He painted the flowers at Arles, one of the southern cities that has an abundance of light and colors. Another famous painter, Paul Cezanne, repeatedly*4 painted a mountain called St. Victoire from his atelier at Aix-en-Provence, about 30km north of Marseille. ( 3 ) like Renoir, Picasso, Matisse and Chagall stayed and worked near the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

 フランス南部

　フランスの食べ物はクリームやバター、卵が多く、あまり健康的ではないと思われているかもしれません。フランス北部ではその通りであるかもしれません。しかし、南部は全く違います。伝統的なフランス南部の料理は、この地方で栽培されているオリーブオイルやトマトをたくさん使います。こうした作物が、イタリアやスペインと同じくらい豊かにあるのです。リンゴやナシ、アンズといった果物も栽培され、温暖な気候のおかげで柑橘類もあります。
　フランス南部はスイス、イタリア、スペインと国境を接しています。南には地中海があり、西には大西洋があります。ニースやカンヌ、マルセイユといった有名な都市が地中海に沿って点在するのに加え、内陸には丘や山もありますから、風景が美しいことは想像がつくでしょう。
　だから、この土地が多くの芸術家を引き付け、ゴッホによる「ひまわり」など数々の絵画にインスピレーションを与えてきたのも驚くにあたりません。色彩と光に富む南の町のひとつ、アルルでゴッホは「ひまわり」を描きました。他にも有名な画家、ポール・セザンヌがサン・ビクトワールという山を繰り返し描きましたが、それはマルセーユから30キロほど北にあるエクサンプロヴァンスのアトリエでのことでした。ルノワール、ピカソ、マチス、シャガールなど他の偉大な芸術家たちは地中海沿岸に滞在し、創作を行いました。
