Read the passage below and choose the best word or phrase from among the four choices for each blank.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, more than 42,100 animals and plants are currently threatened with extinction. The list of the threatened species published by the organization is commonly called the IUCN Red List, which is considered to be the world’s most comprehensive information source ( 1 ).

Some of the species on the list are truly at the brink of disappearing. One such endangered species is the blue-eyed ground-dove. It is estimated that only 16 of these doves are in existence. ( 2 ), they have vivid blue eyes and several blue spots on their wings with orangish brown plumage. They only live in the east of Brazil and nowhere else.

Actually, they had not been seen since 1941, and ( 3 ) were believed to be extinct, until in 2015, a researcher who was doing field work in Brazil heard a repetitive bird call. He didn’t know what bird it was and recorded the call, which was later recognized as belonging to the blue-eyed ground-dove. Scientists are now trying to recover the lost 74 years by studying its biology with an aim to save the species.

和訳

国際自然保護連合によれば、現在42,100以上の動植物が絶滅の危機に瀕しているとのことだ。この連合が発表している絶滅危惧種のリストは、通常IUCNレッドリストと呼ばれ、地球上の保護状況に関する世界で最も包括的な情報源とみなされている。

リストに載っている種の中には、本当に消滅間際のものもある。そのように危機に瀕した種のひとつがblue-eyed ground-doveだ。わずか16羽と推定されている。その名から想像がつくように、鮮やかな青い目を持ち、青い斑点がオレンジがかった茶色の羽根に浮かんでいる。ブラジルの東部のみに生息し、ほかのどこにもいない。

実はこの鳥は1941年以降目撃されたことがなく、そのため絶滅したものと信じられていたが、2015年になって、ある研究者がブラジルでフィールドワークをしていた際、何度も繰り返される鳥の鳴き声を聞いた。この研究者は何の鳥の声かわからなかったが鳴き声を録音し、後になってblue-eyed ground-doveのものと判明した。科学者たちは今、種を救うために生態を研究し、失われた74年を取り戻そうとしている。
