In the days of Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI, in 1591, Kennyo was givenlandin the center of Kyoto (Shichijo-Horikawa, Kyoto City) and reconstructed Hongan-ji Temple.
In 1582, while the Mori clan was encamped opposite Hideyoshi HASHIBA (Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI) at Takamatsu-jo Castle in Bichu Province (the Battle of Bichu Takamatsu-jo Castle), the Honno-ji Incident occurred and Nobunaga ODA was killed at Honno-ji Temple (the Honno-ji Incident).
However, after Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI died, Ieyasu TOKUGAWA, whodefeated the Toyotomi family, supported Kyonyo and gave land for atemplein Karasuma Shichijo to Kyonyo in 1602, which led to the establishment of Higashi Hongwan-ji Temple.
He went to Mt. Koya to escape from Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI's attacks on Negoro in 1585, and laterassumed the position of the chiefpriestat Saikoin Temple in his homeland, Monma-mura Village, Musashi Province (present-day Miyashiro-machi, Minami Saitama-gun, Saitama Prefecture).
