運動会と言えば秋！　だったのが今ではさまざまな理由から5月に開催する学校も珍しくなくなりました。この運動会や体育祭は日本の独特な文化なんです。外国人に説明すると、軍隊みたい、と言う人もいるほど！　さっそく英語で説明してみましょう！

Schools in Japan, from elementary to high school, hold “Sports Day”.

日本では、幼稚園の子どもから高校生まで、学校で運動会が行われます

They are usually held around October.

一般的には10月頃行われます

But recently, because there are many children who are studying for exams during October, some schools have started to hold their Sports Day in May.

しかし最近では、10月は子どもが受験勉強で忙しくなるため、5月に行われる学校もあります

Sports Day is held outside on the school grounds.

学校の校庭で開催します

If it rains on Sports Day, the event will be postponed.

当日雨の場合は、延期になります

If you see fireworks on the morning of Sports Day, it means that the events are on!

There is an opening ceremony where all the groups march in a line, similar to the opening ceremonies at the Olympics.

But of course the performances aren’t as spectacular.

もちろんオリンピックほど華やかなショーはありません

The reasons for holding Sports Day are to get the children interested in exercise, to teach them about working together with others, as well as to give them a sense of responsibility and solidarity.

運動会を開催する目的は、運動に親しむことや、集団行動の基本を学ぶこと、責任感や連帯感を育成することです

On Sports Day, the children participate in lots of different group sports.

運動会では、いろんな団体競技を開催します

Most of the sports are a competition between the classes. The children don’t want to be defeated by another class, so they try their best.

ほとんどの競技がクラスごとの対抗になり、子どもたちは隣のクラスに負けまいと、頑張ります

Tamaire: The children compete to see who can collect the most red and white cloth balls in a basket.

棒付きのかごに、紅白の布の玉を入れて、入った数の多さを競う「玉入れ」

There are performances to cheer on your team, called “ouendan”.

「応援団」と呼ばれる、自分たちのチームを応援するショーも行われます

There are relays for the children who are good at running, group gymnastics, dance and so on.

クラスの足の速い子だけを選んで行われるリレーや、グループで行う組体操、ダンスなどがあります

On the morning of Sports Day, fathers try to find a good spot to watch the event from so they can take photos of their children competing.

運動会の朝から、父親はビデオや写真でわが子の写真を撮影するため、場所取りをします

The mothers prepare a special lunch box for their children and after watching their children participate in Sports Day, they will eat the lunch boxes together as a family.

母親は運動会用にいつもより豪華なお弁当を用意して、子どもの運動会を見学して、家族でお弁当を食べます
