Invention of Ice Cream Soda
There are inventions that have revolutionized our lives, and there are inventions that we could do without, but give our lives some flavor. Ice cream soda is one such invention. Though it seems very natural to combine ice cream with soda today, it was not common until the invention of ice cream soda. So how long did ice cream and soda exist without combining?
Ice cream appeared in our history much earlier than soda in ancient China and Persia. Those early ice creams were only for royals and nobles and consisted of sweetened water that was iced, ground into little pieces, and then decorated with various toppings. Sometimes it was made with fermented milk.
The history of soda is much shorter. Proper techniques for carbonating water were developed in the 18th century, and in 1789, Jacob Schweppe began selling “soda water” in Geneva.
Ice cream soda was invented in 1874 by an American called Robert M. Green. He initially sold a mixture of sweet cream, syrup, and carbonated water, which was popular at the time. But one day he ran out of sweet cream, so he improvised by putting vanilla ice cream in its place. This small change was a big success. It is said that he used to get 6 dollars a day before the invention and ended up earning 600 dollars each day with the combination.
